Benediktinerinnenkloster Stötterlingenburg

church services (tower room)

The former Benedictine convent of Stötterlingenburg, a cultural monument in Saxony-Anhalt, is located in the Harz region. The complex is a testament to medieval sacred architecture and its eventful history, ranging from spiritual use to secular administration.

History+

The monastery was founded in 992 by Hildeward of Halberstadt and consecrated three years later. Under Bishop Reinhard, it underwent renewal, and in 1249, Innocent IV placed the monastery under his protection. By the end of the 13th century, the Counts of Regenstein exercised the Vogt rights. In 1525, during the Peasants' War, the complex suffered looting and destruction, from which it never fully recovered. In the course of the Reformation, the monastery was dissolved in 1557 and converted into a territorial office in 1606. In the 19th century, the estate was gifted to Kleist von Nollendorf. Structural decay continued from the 16th century onwards. Despite repair attempts in the 1950s and a re-consecration of St. Stephen's Church in 1958, church operations had to cease due to further damage. After the collapse of the roof and the south wall of the nave in 1981, a planned demolition in 1986 was prevented through the commitment of the local church community and heritage conservation. A support group began restoration in 1990, allowing the 1000th anniversary of the church's consecration to be celebrated in 1995.

Since 2005, further securing works have been carried out to prevent further decay. The tower of the monastery church has been largely restored and characterizes the silhouette of the locality. Only remnants of the nave walls remain. The tower room can be used for services during the summer months.
