St. Walburga

The convent of St. Walburg was founded around or after 870, but definitely before 893. Initially dedicated to the Salvator, its patronage shifted to Saint Walburga between 1057 and 1075. In 893, relics of the saint were transferred from Eichstätt to Monheim, quickly elevating the convent to regional prominence and making it a center of pilgrimage during the late Carolingian period. Over centuries, the convent developed, acquiring possessions in more than 40 locations. In the 16th century, amidst the Reformation, the convent was dissolved between 1530 and 1533. The last abbess passed away in 1533. In 1574, the convent buildings were demolished, with only the western cloister wing from the 13th century and a 12th-century convent building, now serving as a parish center, remaining. The former convent church is now the parish church of St. Walburga, a late Gothic hall church built in 1509 and later baroqueized.

The former Benedictine convent is situated in Monheim, a town in the Donau-Ries district of Bavaria, Germany. It lies at an elevation of approximately 499 meters above sea level and belongs to the Diocese of Eichstätt.

Of the original convent complex, the Romanesque west wing of the cloister from the 13th century and another convent building from the 12th century, now used as a parish center and youth club, are still preserved. The former convent church now serves as the parish church of St. Walburga. It is protected as a historical monument in Bavaria and continues to house relics of Saint Walburga, which have attracted a stream of pilgrims since 1700.
