Benedictine nunnery Sitzenkirch

The former Benedictine convent of Sitzenkirch in the Lörrach district, Baden-Württemberg, is a historically significant site whose origins date back to the 12th century. The former convent church now serves as the Evangelical Church Sitzenkirch and bears witness to a long and eventful history.
History+
The Benedictine convent of Sitzenkirch was founded around 1151, although the first documentary mention of the place “Sitzenkirken” dates back to 1120. It was established on donations from the noble Kaltenbach family to the St. Blasien monastery. Spiritual care was provided by the provost of Bürgeln. In 1181, the neighboring Gutnau convent was founded by a nun from Sitzenkirch. A feud between Rudolf I of Habsburg and Bishop Heinrich III of Neuenburg-Erguel of Basel led to a fire in 1272 that largely destroyed the convent. However, the Romanesque church was rebuilt and reconsecrated in 1277. It later served as a burial site for the Margraves of Hachberg-Sausenberg. In 1492, the convent was incorporated into the St. Blasien monastery as an independent provostry. During the Peasants' War in 1525, the convent was devastated, the nuns fled and did not return. The convent complex was dissolved in 1525, and the administration of its property was taken over by secular administrators from 1581.
