Kloster Rupertsberg

The foundation of Rupertsberg Abbey took place around 1150 by Hildegard von Bingen, after she had left Disibodenberg Abbey. The choice of location on Rupertsberg, a former outpost of the Ingelheim Imperial Palace, was legitimized by a legend created by Hildegard about Saint Rupert. The three-nave abbey church was consecrated in 1152 by the Archbishop of Mainz. During this period, many of Hildegard's works originated in the monastery's scriptorium. After Hildegard's death in 1179, the monastery initially lost some of its significance but regained great popularity in the late Middle Ages due to a supposed blood miracle. During the Thirty Years' War, the complex was destroyed by Swedish troops in 1632 and was never rebuilt. The ruins later served as a quarry. In 1857, the entire ruin had to make way for the construction of the Nahetal railway, which also destroyed the burial crypt beneath the choir.

Rupertsberg Abbey was located in Bingen, a town in the Mainz-Bingen district of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It was situated on Rupertsberg, on the left bank of the Nahe, near its confluence with the Rhine.

The only surviving remnants of Rupertsberg Abbey, five arcade arches, have been publicly accessible since May 2023 in the “Villa am Rupertsberg.” This is operated by the Bingen city administration and houses information panels on the history of the site. A multimedia station, the “elevator into the past,” allows visitors a virtual journey back to the monastic era. The Koblenz State Main Archives preserves a large part of the former monastic archive.
