The Benedictine convent Riesa was founded between 1111 and 1119. For centuries, it served as a center of monastic life, where Benedictine nuns lived and worked according to their order's rules. The convent church was dedicated to Mary and John the Baptist. In the course of the Reformation, the convent was secularized and dissolved in 1540, marking the end of its almost 400-year history as a spiritual institution.
