Kloster Remse

The Remse monastery was founded shortly after 1143 and was dedicated to Saints Mary, Nicholas, and Michael. It originated as a daughter house of Bürgel Abbey and was initially conceived for monks. However, due to its distance from the mother monastery, it developed into a Benedictine nunnery, which adopted the name “Remse” from 1216. Its economic foundation was based on royal donations of cleared land and several villages. The monastery was imperial immediate and under royal protection, but in 1254 it acquired the right to choose its own protectors. Over time, disputes arose over protection rights and properties with the Lords of Waldenburg and later the Lords of Schönburg, which were settled through compromises. The monastery experienced a period of prosperity in the early 15th century through the acquisition of further land. In the course of the Reformation and the secularization of ecclesiastical property in the Ernestine Electorate of Saxony, Remse Abbey was formally dissolved in 1533.

The Remse monastery is located in the municipality of Remse in the Saxon district of Zwickau, Germany. The remains of the monastery, particularly the so-called “Roter Stock,” are situated on a hillside in the northern part of the municipality, on the left bank of the Zwickauer Mulde river.

Only a part of the former Benedictine nunnery of Remse remains today, known as the “Roter Stock,” which presumably constituted the transept tower of the former monastery church. This building is a protected monument. The current village church of Remse, located on the opposite side of “Kirchberg” street, contains Romanesque architectural elements and was likely also part of the monastic complex.
