The former Benedictine nunnery of Kochel am See in Bavaria, dedicated to Archangel Michael, boasts a long history that began in the 8th century and concluded in the 10th century.
History+
The foundation of Kochel Monastery occurred between 739 and 770, likely around 740, by the noble Huosi family, specifically the brothers Waldram, Eliland, and Landfrid. Simultaneously, other monasteries were established in the region, including the male monastery of Benediktbeuern. A document from this period explicitly mentions the presence of nuns in Kochel. The consecration of the monastery buildings was performed by the papal missionary archbishop Boniface between 747 and 751, in the presence of Duke Tassilo III. Gailsuinda, the founders' sister, was appointed as the first abbess. Throughout its history, the monastery hosted significant figures such as Gisela, the wife of Childeric III, and Luitburga, the wife of Tassilo. Charlemagne's sister Gisela is also said to have lived here. The monastery was destroyed by the Hungarians by 955 at the latest, but probably as early as 908, and was never fully rebuilt thereafter.

The former monastery is situated in the municipality of Kochel am See, in the district of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, in the Free State of Bavaria, Germany.
