The foundation of Holzzelle Abbey is dated to the early or mid-12th century, with the earliest mention of the year 827 coming from other sources. It was a convent of Benedictine nuns and was under the patronage of Saint Mary and possibly also John the Baptist. For several centuries, the monastery shaped the spiritual and economic life of its surroundings before it was dissolved and secularized between 1525 and 1535 in the course of the Reformation.
