The former Benedictine convent of Heiligenrode, at times also run as a double monastery, is located in Lower Saxony and was once an important religious center in the region.
History+
The monastery of Heiligenrode was founded in 1182. It was endowed by Friedrich von Mackenstedt on lands owned by the Archdiocese of Bremen. Initially mentioned as a double monastery in one document, it later developed into a pure nunnery. The first monastery church was consecrated in 1189. The monastery, dedicated to Mary, was led by a provost and a prioress. The conventuals primarily came from the lower nobility of the region. In the 14th century, the monastery experienced a period of prosperity, during which the current monastery church was built. Despite phases of economic difficulties and a decline from the mid-15th century, which led to a reform and its affiliation with the Bursfelde Congregation, the monastery continued to exist until its dissolution in 1816.
