St. John's Church, municipal grounds

The former Benedictine convent of Eldena, once a significant spiritual center, is located in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Originally founded as a Cistercian nunnery, it shaped the region for centuries through its extensive landholdings and spiritual influence. Today, only a few traces remain of the convent's former grandeur, whose history is marked by fires, reconstruction, and eventual secularization.

History+

The convent of Eldena was founded in the first half of the 13th century, more precisely between 1228 and 1235, by Bishop Gottschalk of Ratzeburg. Initially conceived as a Cistercian nunnery following the rules of Saint Benedict, it was subordinate to Amelungsborn Abbey as its mother house. A fire in 1290 destroyed the first convent buildings, but the convent was rebuilt, and its privileges renewed. In the following decades, the convent acquired extensive lands and rights, including the saltworks in nearby Conow in 1307. Its sphere of influence extended beyond Mecklenburg. In the 16th century, the convent lost its significance. After the Reformation, Eldena Convent was secularized in 1556 and finally dissolved in 1588. The convent church burned down in 1830, and parts of its foundations were used for the construction of the current St. John's Church.
