Benediktinerinnenkloster Bonn

The former Benedictine convent in Bonn, also known as Mariahilf Convent or Convent of Perpetual Adoration, was a significant center for the Benedictine Sisters of the Most Holy Sacrament from 1857 to 2001. Initially located in Bonn's city center, it found its permanent home in the Endenich district from 1888 onwards.
History+
The convent's founding in 1857 was initiated by Karoline von Romberg, who acquired the abandoned Capuchin monastery in Bonn. It was settled by Benedictine sisters from Saint-Omer in Northern France and Osnabrück. Mechtildis Scott served as the first superior, followed in 1863 by Josefine Karoline von Fürstenberg-Stammheim. Due to the Prussian Kulturkampf laws, the community was forced into exile in Driebergen, Netherlands, in 1875. Upon their return in 1888, they moved into a country house in Bonn-Endenich, purchased from Paula von Fürstenberg-Stammheim. The convent grew rapidly, necessitating a new building from 1891, completed in 1916. This growth also led to several daughter foundations, including the Herz-Jesu-Kloster Kreitz in Neuss-Holzheim (1899) and the Niederlahnstein Convent (1907), later relocated to Johannisberg. Between 1941 and 1945, the convent was confiscated and destroyed by bombing raids. After reconstruction, completed in 1962, the convent operated a nursing home from 1952 to 1984. Due to the aging of the community and a lack of vocations, the convent was dissolved in 2001.
