Kloster Amtenhausen

The founding of Amtenhausen Abbey is dated before 1107 and was initiated by Abbot Theoger of St. Georgen in the Black Forest. Initially, it functioned as a priory of that monastery. It is believed that Amtenhausen, as a convent, emerged from a possible early double monastery arrangement typical of the Hirsau Reform movement at St. Georgen. The Vita Theogeri, a 12th-century biography of Abbot Theoger, records a considerable size for the convent, with approximately one hundred nuns. The "most holy" Beatrix was a central figure in the community and was venerated after her death. Due to its size, Amtenhausen may have sent nuns to populate other monasteries, such as Friedenweiler, Admont, and Urspring. In 1682, Amtenhausen gained independence as an abbey, having previously been a priory for an extended period. During the secularization between 1802 and 1808, the monastery was dissolved and passed into the possession of the Princes of Fürstenberg. The monastic buildings, including the convent structure newly erected between 1786 and 1791 and the church with an organ by Johann Andreas Silbermann, were demolished by 1842. The church's furnishings, such as the high altar by Johann Pöllandt from 1688 and other side altars, were dispersed among surrounding communities. Today, only the former priory building, which is privately owned, and a memorial cross with a shrine erected in 1960, serve as reminders of the former Benedictine Abbey.

The former monastery is located on the Baar plateau near Zimmern, a district of Immendingen, close to the town of Tuttlingen in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg. The site is situated at an elevation of approximately 754 meters above sea level.

Today, only the former priory building of the once-Benedictine abbey remains, which is privately owned. A memorial cross with a shrine, erected in 1960, also commemorates the historic monastery.
