Monastery Neukloster

The origins of Sonnenkamp Monastery date back to 1219, when it was founded by Prince Heinrich Borwin I and Bishop Brunward of Schwerin in Parchow as a nunnery. Just eight years later, the convent moved to the village of Kuszin, which later adopted the name Neukloster. The foundation followed the rules of Saint Benedict, with the first nuns likely coming from the Benedictine monastery of Arendsee. After 1245, the convent adopted the Cistercian rule, probably due to the influence of the Cistercian Abbey of Doberan. Construction of the church began shortly after the new foundation and was completed in three building phases by approximately 1240. The church was consecrated in 1236 to the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist. In the 13th and 14th centuries, the monastery acquired extensive landholdings through donations and purchases, which by 1362 included 37 villages and estates. The convent was led by a prioress, who, together with a provost, managed the affairs of the monastery.

Sonnenkamp Monastery is located in Neukloster in the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 32 meters above sea level.

The former Sonnenkamp Monastery is currently protected as an architectural monument in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The complex bears witness to the former importance and cultural richness of the region.
