Deutz Abbey

The abbey was founded in 1001 by Archbishop Heribert of Cologne, fulfilling a promise made to Emperor Otto III. Benedictine monks settled the monastery, which Heribert endowed with extensive gifts, including land and tithe rights. A large Romanesque abbey church was consecrated in 1020 and served a year later as the final resting place for Archbishop Heribert, whose name it subsequently adopted. In the 12th century, his remains were reinterred in a precious shrine. Its strategic location on the Rhine led to the complex being repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt in the 14th and 16th centuries. The current structure of the former abbey church was built between 1659 and 1663 on the old foundations, with the curved outer walls of the side aisles revealing the extent of the earlier central building. The interior was furnished in the Baroque style. During the Napoleonic era, the monastery was secularized, and the abbey church was elevated to a parish church in 1804. The monastery building suffered severe damage in World War II but was rebuilt in the 1970s, preserving its historic facade.

The Benedictine Abbey of St. Heribert is located in Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 45 meters above sea level.

The rebuilt monastery building now houses a Caritas senior care facility. Inside, visitors can see wall paintings by contemporary artist Werner Weber. Since the 1990s, the former abbey church has served as a place of worship for Cologne's Greek Orthodox community and features an Orthodox iconostasis in the choir.
