Kloster Mariacron

The foundation of the monastery is dated to 814 under Emperor Louis the Pious, initially inhabited by Benedictine nuns. It was situated outside the city walls of Oppenheim. In 1265, supervision of the convent was transferred to the Cistercian order of Eberbach Abbey. The name Mariacron first appeared in documents in 1280. The foundation was known for Oppenheim's first convent school and served as an educational institution for noble daughters. The abbesses enjoyed high esteem and possessed extensive properties, as evidenced by numerous donations and royal decisions. During the Reformation in the mid-16th century, Abbess Agnes von Dienheim resisted reformatory efforts but could not prevent its transformation into a secular women's collegiate foundation in 1565. After her death in 1571 and that of the administrator in 1585, the convent was managed by the Ecclesiastical Property Administration. During the Thirty Years' War, the building was damaged in 1631 and completely destroyed by French troops in 1689 during the War of the Palatine Succession.

Mariacron Abbey was located in Oppenheim, a town in the Mainz-Bingen district of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, on the road to Mainz.

After its destruction, there was no interest in rebuilding. In the 19th century, parts of the remains were demolished. In 1894, the Mariacron distillery was established on the site, making the name internationally known through its brandy brand. Today, an old gable wall, an inscription plaque, and a historic bell in Nierstein commemorate the convent. In 2007, an investor acquired the former distillery site and redeveloped it into a residential and commercial complex, preserving the history of the location.
