Basilica di Sant’Antonio

The church can be visited

The Basilica of Saint Anthony in Padua, often simply called "Il Santo", is an outstanding sacred building in the Veneto region, Italy. It is one of the most important and most visited pilgrimage sites in the country and is recognized worldwide as an international sanctuary.

History+

The origins of the Basilica date back to 1229, when a monastery was built on the site of a small Marian chapel, presumably founded by Saint Anthony himself. After his death in 1231, construction of a dignified burial church began in 1232. Initially, a simple Franciscan church was built, which was later expanded with side chapels, domes, and towers. By around 1310, the main construction of the church was completed. In the late 17th and early 18th centuries, the Treasury Chapel was added to the choir. The 19th century brought extensive restoration work, during which baroque elements were removed to restore the original character.
