The Basilica di San Marco, also known as St. Mark's Basilica, is an impressive sacred building in Venice, Italy. As the former central state sanctuary of the Republic of Venice and now the cathedral of the Patriarch of Venice, its Byzantine-inspired architecture and magnificent mosaics significantly shape the cityscape.
History+
The first church dedicated to Saint Mark was founded in 828 and built between 829 and 832 as the palace chapel of the Doge's Palace. Its purpose was to house the remains of the Evangelist Mark, stolen from Alexandria in 828, thereby replacing Saint Theodore as the city's patron saint and demonstrating Venice's independence from Byzantium. After being destroyed by fire in 976, the reconstruction of the second church began. The current St. Mark's Basilica was erected between 1063 and 1094 as a foundation by Doge Domenico Contarini. Legend has it that the remains of Saint Mark were miraculously rediscovered on June 25, 1094, leading to a public holiday. Until the end of the Venetian Republic, the patriarchal see was deliberately kept away from the center of power.
