The construction of Ballyloughan Castle is believed to date back to the 13th century. Originally, the complex featured a spacious courtyard protected by a curtain wall and an outer moat. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands multiple times. Initially, it was owned by the Kavanagh family before passing to the Bagenal family, who also gave their name to the nearby town of Bagenalstown. In the early 19th century, the castle was finally acquired by the Bruen family.
