The origins of Austråttborgen date back to the 10th century, when it became the residence of numerous nobles and officials who significantly shaped Norwegian history. The current appearance of the manor house is attributed to Chancellor Ove Bjelke, who initiated its construction around 1656. A devastating fire in 1916 almost completely destroyed the building, after which it underwent extensive restoration.
