Augustinerkloster Zerbst

The monastery's origins date back to 1390, when the Zerbst city council provided a building plot to the Augustinian Monastery in Magdeburg. The neighboring Nikolaikirche was transferred from the Bartholomäistift to the new monastery. By 1396, the monastery's existence was first documented. In 1425, it hosted a provincial chapter of the Saxony-Thuringia order province. Later, in 1485, the city council complained to the Pope about the poor condition of the city's monastic houses, leading to a visitation of the monastery by the provincial superior in 1491. The Zerbst monastery did not join the Observant movement in 1507 and hosted a chapter of the German Non-Observant Congregation in 1518. The Reformation brought profound changes: in 1522, unrest occurred in the Nikolaikirche, influenced by reformatory ideas. Martin Luther visited the city, preached once in the Augustinian Monastery and several times to the populace. Subsequently, the monastery's income significantly decreased, forcing some monks to leave. In 1525, the remaining six brothers sold the complex to the city council and divided the proceeds. As early as 1526, a hospital was established in the former monastery buildings, which burned down in 1556 but was rebuilt. The remaining parts of the building suffered severe damage in 1945, but some sections of the cloister have been preserved to this day.

The Augustinian Monastery was situated in the northwest of the town of Zerbst/Anhalt in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district, a region in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It was located directly on the medieval town wall, near the Nikolaikirche.

Today, parts of the cloister from the former monastic buildings are still preserved, bearing witness to the historical significance of the site. The complex no longer serves its original purpose, but the surviving remnants recall its monastic past.
