Augustinerkloster Wittenberg

The Augustinian Monastery was likely founded in 1504 on the site of the former Holy Spirit Hospital. It was primarily intended as accommodation for Augustinian monks studying at the recently established University of Wittenberg. In 1508, Martin Luther moved into the monastery. From here, in 1517, he triggered the Reformation with the publication of his theses. By the end of 1521, many monks had left the monastery, and in January 1522, the remaining brothers were also permitted to depart. After his return from the Wartburg in March 1522, Luther again resided in the monastery, along with a few remaining monks. In 1524, Elector Frederick the Wise transferred the building complex to Martin Luther. Following his marriage in June 1525, Luther and his wife Katharina von Bora moved into the former monastery. She managed the extensive lands, engaged in livestock farming, and operated a brewery to provide for the numerous residents and guests. The house underwent several renovations to create private living areas. Regularly, between twenty-five and fifty people lived in the former monastery, including students and indigent guests. After Luther's death, his heirs ceded the property to the university in 1564.

The monastery was situated in the eastern part of the medieval city of Wittenberg, directly on the city wall and near the Elster Gate. Today, this site houses the Luther House (Augusteum) in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.

The former monastery complex is now known as the Luther House (Augusteum) and serves as a museum and memorial to Martin Luther.
