Augustinerkloster Schwäbisch Gmünd

The Augustinian Monastery in Schwäbisch Gmünd, located in the Ostalb region of Baden-Württemberg, is a former monastery whose origins date back to the late 13th century. It was an important center of the Augustinian Hermits order and continues to shape the cityscape to this day.
History+
In 1284, the city of Schwäbisch Gmünd granted the Augustinian Hermits order permission to settle and acquire land, marking the beginning of the monastery's construction. Bishop Hartmann of Augsburg granted permission for services and sermons in 1285. A dispute with the rector of the parish church in 1288, which even called for the demolition of the emerging monastery church, was decided by Pope Nicholas IV in favor of the Augustinians. King Henry VII urged the city twenty years later to support the order's expansion. In 1535, the monastery hosted Emperor Charles V. The original medieval half-timbered buildings were replaced by baroque new constructions in the 18th century, after a poor condition of the buildings was noted in 1732. Master builder Christian Wiedemann led the monastery's reconstruction from 1738, which was completed in 1747. The monastery church, originally a Gothic building, underwent a baroque transformation from 1756 under Johann Michael Keller. The monastery was dissolved in 1803 as part of the secularization. The church became an evangelical garrison church in 1806 and an evangelical parish church in 1817.
