Augustinerkloster Germershausen

The Augustinian Monastery in Germershausen was founded in 1864, following the departure of the Capuchins. The Augustinians dedicated themselves to both the care of pilgrims and the schooling of children in the northern Eichsfeld region. The first students were admitted in 1888, leading to the official establishment of the monastery school in 1905. Due to increasing student numbers, the school was expanded in 1929. In 1970, the monastery school ceased operations. In 1995, a new building for the monastery was constructed in the monastery garden. In 2019, the last Augustinians left Germershausen, and the monastery was abandoned. The future use of the monastery buildings remains uncertain.

The monastery is situated in Germershausen, a village in the Göttingen district in South Lower Saxony, Germany.

After the closure of the monastery school, the St. Martin educational center was established in the former school buildings in 1972. This center offered courses for families and holiday camps for children, among other activities. Extensive renovations took place in 2000. After the Augustinians withdrew from management in 2010, the Diocese of Hildesheim continued to operate the educational center alone, but ceased its operations at the end of 2020. The house chapel of the St. Martin educational center was de-consecrated on December 1, 2021. The further use of the former monastery buildings is still open.
