Augustinian Monastery

The establishment of the Augustinian Monastery in Freiburg was approved by Count Egino II in 1278, although Augustinian hermits had already been present in the city. The consecration of the Augustinian Church by Strasbourg Bishop Konrad von Lichtenberg took place in 1299. Construction of the monastic complex began in the early 14th century, utilizing sandstone from the Lorettoberg. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the complex underwent Baroque alterations and new constructions, including the raising of the church's nave and its outfitting with oval windows in 1706. As part of the Josephine reforms, the monastery was dissolved in 1784, and the Augustinian fathers moved to the Franciscan monastery. Following secularization in 1803, the church nave served as one of Germany's first city theaters from 1823 to 1910. Later, parts of the city's collection of antiquities were stored there, and some buildings fell into disrepair or served other purposes. From 1922, under Max Wingenroth, the monastery began its use as the Freiburg City Museum, which evolved into the Augustiner Museum from 1923, incorporating the city's art collections. A comprehensive renovation starting in 2006 altered its appearance, opened the west facade, and redesigned the church nave, as well as the cellar and attic, for exhibition purposes.

The Augustinian Monastery is located in the city of Freiburg im Breisgau, in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It stands at an elevation of approximately 288 meters above sea level.

Since 1923, the former monastery buildings have housed the Augustiner Museum, which presents municipal art collections, thus serving a cultural purpose. The Gothic cloister is a preserved historical element of the complex.
