Augustinian Monastery

The monastery was founded in the mid-13th century. After a fire in 1334, which largely destroyed the complex, it was rebuilt and further modified in the 15th century. In 1430, the monastery's representatives were granted citizenship of Speyer at their own request. Over time, the originally poor orders gained wealth through trade and inheritances, leading the Speyer city council to demand contributions for the mercenary army in 1488. In the early 16th century, Protestant masses were also held in parts of the monastery, and in 1526, Prior Michael Diller, among others, embraced Luther's ideas, causing some monks to leave the monastery. An agreement with the city allowed some monks to return in 1570.

During the great city fire of Speyer in 1689, the monastery was almost completely destroyed again, with only the choir of the 13th-century Gothic church surviving. The convent was rebuilt on its medieval foundations between 1697 and 1714, and from 1733 to 1737, the complex was expanded into a regular four-wing structure. After the conquest of Speyer by French troops in 1793, the monastery was secularized and its buildings leased. In 1804, they were auctioned off to private individuals and used as housing for the poor. The city of Speyer acquired the buildings in 1855. In 1866, all convent buildings, including the Gothic choir, were demolished to make way for a school building, which was erected in 1866/67. The cloister was integrated into the south wing of the school. In 1869, the Historical Museum of the Palatinate was founded on the third floor of the school building, moving to its own building in 1910. The school building was demolished in 1982, and in its place, the main branch of the Sparkasse Vorderpfalz was built in 1985.

The former Augustinian Hermitage Monastery was located in the city of Speyer, an independent city in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.

Today, Augustinergasse commemorates the former monastery. A preserved 15th-century cloister with late Gothic, pointed-arch tracery arcades is located at Wormser Straße 39. This was dismantled in 1982 and re-erected four years later, slightly relocated and in a different configuration. An event hall of the Sparkasse is named Augustinersaal in memory of the monastery.
