Augustinerkloster Rösrath

The former Augustinian Hermits Monastery Rösrath, a historic monument in the Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia, bears witness to a rich past. The preserved buildings, including the Church of St. Nicholas of Tolentino, the rectory, and the Augustinus House, are now protected as architectural monuments and shape the townscape of Rösrath.
History+
The monastery's history began in 1672 with the donation of the Rösrath Vitus Chapel to the Cologne Augustinian Hermits by the Archbishop of Cologne, Maximilian Heinrich of Bavaria. The monks took on the task of Catholic religious instruction and evangelization in Rösrath, as the local parish had become Protestant. The convent grew steadily, and from 1677, a monastery building was constructed. The monastery church was completed in 1708, and a school was established in 1710. A cemetery was laid out in 1798. In 1795, the monastery was attacked by French troops, during which the prior was murdered. The secularization in the Duchy of Berg led to the dissolution of the monastery in 1803. However, it served for almost three more decades as a central and dying-out monastery until it was finally closed in 1831. In 1832, King Frederick William III donated the monastery to the Catholic parish. The former monastery church became the parish church of St. Nicholas of Tolentino in 1853.
