Stift Sankt Peter Waldsee

The foundation of St. Peter's Monastery in Waldsee took place on May 12, 1181, by Emperor Friedrich. The monastery's provosts, who from 1618 held the title of mitred abbot, also served as the town's parish priests. In 1282, the monastery's vogtei (advocacy) transferred from King Rudolf to the Lords of Waldsee for 20 marks of silver, before eventually coming under the control of the Lords of Waldburg. Berthold von Waldsee, a baron and knight, was the first provost. Pope Alexander IV placed the monastery under papal protection in 1258, a status confirmed by subsequent popes. Over the centuries, the monastery acquired extensive landholdings, including the court of Reute. Under Provost Heinrich III, a Count of Veringen, the church was incorporated into the monastery in 1351. The collegiate church underwent a comprehensive reconstruction under Provost Heinrich Fuchs, who was elected in 1450. It features two rows of columns with pointed arches and six carved altars. The two domed towers were added around 1760. A side chapel houses the crypt of the Princes of Waldburg-Waldsee, where Georg Truchsess von Waldburg, known as Bauernjörg, is also interred. At the canons' own request, and not as part of secularization, the monastery was dissolved in 1788 by a decree from Emperor Joseph II. The buildings were sold, the provost's building demolished and converted into a granary and residences. The possessions were transferred to the Imperial-Royal Austrian Religious Fund. When Waldsee became part of the Kingdom of Württemberg in 1806, these properties were confiscated.

The former monastery is situated in the town of Waldsee, which belongs to the Ravensburg district in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

The former collegiate church now serves as St. Peter's Parish Church and, with its distinctive towers, is a landmark of the town.
