Augustinerchorherrenstift Salzwedel

The origins of the monastery date back to 1247, when Margraves Johann I and Otto III of Brandenburg, at the request of their mother Mechthild and their wives Sophia of Denmark and Beatrix of Bohemia, founded a hospital. This hospital, situated in the suburb of Perwer outside the old town of Salzwedel, was confirmed by Pope Alexander IV in 1260 and entrusted to the Augustinian Canons. Over time, the hospital was transformed into a Beguinage in the 15th century. A significant change occurred in 1470 with the introduction of the Windesheim Reform. The monastery's history concluded in 1540 with the pledging of its assets to Franz von Bartensleben, leading to its dissolution.

The former Augustinian Canons' Monastery is situated in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, a region in northern Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.

Today, only the choir of the former monastery church remains of the original monastic complex. This brick structure, dating from before the mid-15th century, displays the characteristic features of Brick Gothic. The choir is designed with three bays and a 5⁄10-closure, featuring stepped buttresses. Inside, cross vaults with pear-shaped ribs on head corbels are visible. The northwest side was redesigned in 1878 with a massive bell tower on the gable. In 2012, the building received a new set of bells.
