The monastery was founded in 1326 as a monastery for the Augustinian Canons Regular. Originally dedicated to the Mother of God, Mary, the patronage later shifted to St. Clemens. For centuries, the monastery shaped the spiritual and cultural life of the region until it was dissolved in 1802 during the secularization.
