St.-Peters-Stift

The Petersstift was founded in 1045 by Agnes of Poitou, wife of Emperor Henry III, concurrently with the Palatine Abbey of St. Simon and Judas. The Emperor granted special privileges to the foundation. In the subsequent centuries, the monastery flourished both materially and culturally. The collegiate church developed into an imposing basilica with a westwork, transept, and crossing tower. Several of the monastery's provosts rose to high positions within the church and the empire. Towards the end of the 15th century, however, a decline set in. Even the takeover by Franciscans from Goslar in 1422 could not halt the decay. In 1500, the monastery lost its vogtei to the city of Goslar, thereby ceasing to exist legally. In 1527, during the threat to Goslar by Henry II of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, the strategically located Petersstift, along with other sacred buildings, was demolished. A reconstruction after the introduction of the Reformation in the previous year did not occur. Following the great city fire of 1728, the remaining ruins served as a quarry, particularly for the rebuilding of St. Stephani Church, and eventually disappeared completely. In 1871, excavations and surveys by Adelbert Hotzen uncovered and secured the church's ground plan.

The former Augustinian Canons Regular Monastery was situated on the Petersberg, east of the old town of Goslar in Lower Saxony, Germany.

Today, only the secured foundation remnants of the church's ground plan are visible from the former monastery, bearing witness to the historical significance of the site.
