Augustinerchorfrauenstift Pillenreuth

The Augustinian Canonesses' Convent, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, was founded in 1345 by Konrad Groß, who served as the imperial bailiff in Nuremberg at the time. In 1422, the monastery adopted the reform statutes of Cardinal Branda, thus playing a pioneering role in the contemporary efforts for church and monastic reform. The Pillenreuth Rule was also adopted by the Inzigkofen Abbey in 1431. During the Second Margrave War in 1552, Pillenreuth was destroyed by the troops of Albrecht Alcibiades and was not rebuilt thereafter. The last living nun handed over the property to the city of Nuremberg in 1596, which subsequently sold it. The property was later divided and resold. From 1808/18, the settlement belonged to Worzeldorf, and as part of the municipal territorial reform on July 1, 1972, Pillenreuth was incorporated into Nuremberg. Today, only remnants of the former monastic complex remain.

The former monastery is situated in Nuremberg, a major city in Bavaria, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 328 meters above sea level.

Today, only a few remnants of the former monastic complex are visible. However, the significance of the site is still highlighted by the preserved holdings of its medieval library, which bear witness to a lively translation, writing, and lending activity in the 15th century, particularly under Prioress Anna Ebin (1461–1476).
