Augustinian Convent Obernkirchen

The first confirmed mention of Obernkirchen Abbey dates back to 1167, when it was founded as an Augustinian convent. It assumed local sovereignty over Obernkirchen. During the Reformation in the County of Schaumburg in 1559, the nuns initially resisted but ultimately had to submit to comital authority. The abbey lost its sovereign rights in 1560 and was transformed into an evangelical women's convent in 1565, primarily for daughters of the Schaumburg nobility. Following the division of the County of Schaumburg in 1647, the abbey came under the control of the Landgraves of Hesse-Kassel. Although briefly dissolved in 1810, it was re-established in 1814 and assigned to the Klosterkammer Hannover. Since 1962, the abbess has led the abbey, and the canonesses are no longer required to be noble.

The Abbey Obernkirchen is situated in the town of Obernkirchen within the Schaumburg district of Lower Saxony, Germany.

Today, Obernkirchen Abbey is a public corporation. A conference center has been housed in the west wing since 1994, and since 2010, the abbey serves as a "women's place" in memory of Agnes von Dincklage, a former headmistress.
