Kloster Marienborn

Cultural monument

The Augustinian Canonesses' Convent Marienborn, a historic monastery located in the Börde region of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, is a significant cultural monument. The partially preserved buildings bear witness to a long and eventful history, closely intertwined with the region.

History+

The origins of the convent date back to an apparition of the Virgin Mary in the 12th century over a spring, which soon became a pilgrimage site. A chapel was built over the spring, and the location, originally named Morthdal, attracted many seeking help. Archbishop Wichmann of Magdeburg founded a hospital in 1191 to care for pilgrims. Between 1230 and 1250, this hospital was transformed into a convent by settling Augustinian Canonesses from the nearby Marienberg convent. However, the young convent experienced early setbacks due to fires in 1252, 1277, 1414, and 1571. In 1573, the convent became Protestant, and in 1686, after the Duchy of Magdeburg became part of Prussia, it was converted into a noble ladies' foundation. Its dissolution occurred in 1810 by a decree from Jérôme Bonaparte. The convent's estate was subsequently sold and gifted, undergoing various changes of ownership, and was acquired in 1931 by Rabbethge und Giesecke Aktiengesellschaft after a bankruptcy.
