St. Annen-Kloster

The foundation stone for the convent and its church was laid in 1502, and construction in the late Gothic style continued until 1515. The dedication to Saint Anne was made at the suggestion of the then Bishop of Lübeck, Dietrich II. Arndes. Vinzenz Sisinnius Hesse from Braunschweig was the master builder. Funding was largely provided by wealthy Lübeck citizens who wished to house unmarried daughters in the convent. Numerous coats of arms of the founders, including councilors and long-distance merchants, are preserved in the chapter house. The willingness to donate was encouraged by indulgences. As early as 1508, Bishop Wilhelm Westphal consecrated the choir of the convent church, the cloister, and the bells. With its completion in 1515, Augustinian canonesses from Steterburg Abbey moved in, living according to the strict rule of the Windesheim Congregation. The Reformation led to a sharp decline in donations from the 1520s onwards. After the convent's closure in 1532 and the city's acquisition of the buildings in 1538, the last nuns left the foundation in 1542.

The Augustinian Canonesses' Convent is located in the Hanseatic city of Lübeck in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is situated in the southeastern Old Town, not far from St. Aegidien Church and the synagogue.

After secularization, the convent church was initially used as a warehouse. From 1601, part of the premises served as a poorhouse, which also functioned as a workhouse modeled on English examples. Today, the former convent is a central component of the St. Annen Museum Quarter and houses exhibitions on art and cultural history.
