Augustinerchorfrauenstift Immichenhain

The monastery of Immichenhain was founded between 1124 and 1175, likely in connection with the Premonstratensian double monastery of Wirberg. The widow Immecha, after whom the place is named, is mentioned as a foundress. The monastery church was dedicated to Saint Mary, with Saint John the Evangelist added as a patron saint later. From 1263, the monastery was under the supervision of Wirberg. After the sisters of Wirberg joined the Augustinian Canonesses' Order in 1286, Immichenhain also became an Augustinian Canonesses' foundation. In 1335, the foundation acquired the village of Immichenhain. In the 15th century, the monastery underwent reforms in the spirit of the Windesheim Congregation to promote a stricter monastic life. With the Reformation in Hesse, the foundation was dissolved in 1527 by Landgrave Philipp I, and its assets were converted into a landgravial domain.

The monastery of Immichenhain is situated in the Immichenhain district of the municipality of Ottrau in North Hesse, Germany. It is located on the western edge of the village, directly above the valley basin.

The former monastery church now serves as the village church of Immichenhain. The complex is a protected monument and bears witness to the long history of the place.
