Cultural monument

The Augustinian Canonesses' Convent Andernach, a historic monastery in Rhineland-Palatinate, is a significant cultural monument in Germany. Located in the Mayen-Koblenz district, it bears witness to a long and eventful history dating back to the early Middle Ages. The complex, originally founded as a monastery for monks, evolved into an influential convent for Augustinian canonesses.

History+

The origins of the site date back to the 6th or 7th century, when the monastic monastery of St. Stephan was established there. After its destruction in 883 by Normans, the site lay in ruins for over two centuries. In 1127, the relocation of the Springiersbach women's convent to Andernach was initiated, and in 1129, a new foundation was built on the remains of the old monastery. The first prioress was Texwindis. The new Augustinian Canonesses' Convent, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, was named "Our Lady before the Walls". Pope Eugen III confirmed the monastery in 1152. Initially limited to a maximum of one hundred ladies, the convent experienced a flourishing period in the 13th and 14th centuries and acquired extensive landholdings through noble endowments. In the 15th century, a decline occurred, which was counteracted by a reformation of monastic life in 1499. The abbey suffered severe damage during the Thirty Years' War but was subsequently rebuilt. In the early 18th century, the convent gained independence from Springiersbach Abbey.
