Ashtown Castle
Ashtown Castle, a historic tower house type castle, is located in the expansive Phoenix Park in Dublin, Ireland. Although its exact construction date is unknown, it is distinguished by its unique construction style, which suggests it belongs to the so-called "10-pound castles" under King Henry VI.
History+
The existence of Ashtown Castle is confirmed from the early 17th century. It is presumed that its construction took place during a period when King Henry VI promoted castle building with a grant of ten pounds, provided certain criteria were met. In 1641, John Connell, also known as John of Ashtown, was the owner of the estate. From 1751, work began on Ashtown Lodge, an extension that transformed the original building into a mansion and was modernized from 1774. From 1782, it served as the residence for the Under Secretary for Ireland. Between 1922 and 1929, the estate housed the US Embassy, before being used by the Apostolic Nuncio, the diplomatic representative of the Vatican, until 1978. A comprehensive restoration in 1989 led to the demolition of the lodge, while the original castle core was preserved.
