Asam Castle

The Asam-Schlössl is the former residence of the Baroque artist Cosmas Damian Asam in the Thalkirchen district of Munich. Today, the building is used as a historic restaurant.

In 1687, the Electoral Court Councillor Adrian v. Kray built a country estate in Thalkirchen, which at that time was significantly outside Munich. In 1724, Cosmas Damian Asam acquired this country estate and converted it into its current form as a spacious artist's residence. He added a floor to the building and adorned the new facade with frescoes in 1729/30, as was typical for Munich in earlier times. At the same time, a geometric Baroque palace garden was laid out on the south side. His brother Egid Quirin also built a chapel. He paid for the costs with the fee he had received for his fresco work in the Swiss monastery of Einsiedel. Therefore, Cosmas Damian Asam named his estate after the Swiss pilgrimage site Asamisch Maria Einsiedel Dall.

Asam's death in 1739 ended the construction activity. Subsequently, the estate changed hands several times. In 1838, a popular excursion restaurant was established on the east side. From 1923–1927, the facades were again adorned with frescoes. During World War II, the Asam-Schlössl burned out. In 1947, the house was secured with an emergency roof. In 1957, the architect and monument conservator Erwin Schleich acquired the property from the state capital Munich. In 1981/82, the frescoes were reconstructed by Karl Manninger according to vedutas in Asam's original version.

In 1992, Augustiner Bräu acquired the Asam-Schlössl. Both the frescoes on the facades and in the ballroom, which is located on the second floor of the castle, were restored by the Augsburg painter Hermenegild Peiker.

Since summer 1993, the Asam-Schlössl has housed a restaurant, which is run by Birgit Netzle-Piechotka as the landlady.
