Antoniterkirche

The Antoniterkloster in Würzburg, a former establishment of the Antonite order, was once an important religious center in the Bavarian city. Its history reflects the religious and social upheavals of the region, from its medieval foundation to its secularization and subsequent uses. Today, only a few traces remain of its former significance, but the preserved elements offer an insight into the past of this place.
History+
The monastery was founded in 1434 and was subordinate to the preceptory of Isenheim, an important institution of the Antonite order. However, the monastery's existence was short-lived, as it was dissolved in 1545 during the Reformation. In October of the same year, the Antoniushof, part of the monastic complex, was leased to a citizen named Mumpach, who opened an inn there. The monastery church was restored and re-consecrated in 1610, before the city of Würzburg acquired the entire complex in 1686. In 1725, the Ursulines took over the buildings. The complex suffered severe damage during World War II. Between 1972 and 1980, the chapel in Ursulinengasse was rebuilt in simplified forms.
