Antoniter Abbey Memmingen

The monastery's origins date back to after 1192. In 1214, Emperor Frederick II granted the convent the patronage rights over St. Martin's Church in Memmingen. The monastery received its first donations even before 1235. Despite a far-reaching collection district that extended to Moravia, the Memmingen Antonite house was among the financially weaker ones in the Holy Roman Empire. Under Preceptor Jean Barrucher, a period of intensive construction began in 1391, leading to the creation of an Antonius Chapel and a new hospital. In the mid-15th century, under Abbot Petrus Mitte von Caprariis, construction of the still-existing four-winged complex commenced. The Reformation led to its administration by the city council between 1527 and 1549, until the monastery was finally dissolved and handed over to the city in 1562. The well-preserved building later served as an Evangelical-Lutheran rectory, barracks, and subsequently passed into private ownership. A comprehensive renovation was completed in 1996.

The former Antonite Monastery is situated in the city of Memmingen, in the federal state of Bavaria, Germany. The complex lies at an elevation of approximately 605 meters above sea level.

Today, the complex houses the Antonite and Strigel Museums, the city library, and a cafe. The former monastery church, located outside the monastery walls, serves as the so-called children's teaching church and features historical paintings and frescoes.
