Antoniterkloster Höchst

The history of the Antonite Monastery Höchst began in 1441 when the Antonite Order relocated from Roßdorf near Hanau to Höchst, following an invitation from the Elector-Archbishop Dietrich Schenk von Erbach of Mainz. This move brought extensive privileges: the Antonites took over the Justinuskirche, which was then the parish church of Höchst, as well as the former Albanus Monastery and all associated tax-exempt revenues and rights. Goods for the monastery's needs could be imported duty-free. The Justinuskirche was extended with a Gothic high choir, to which the monastery complex with residential and economic buildings was adjoined. In the course of secularization, the monastery was dissolved in 1803. Already in October 1802, Höchst had been assigned to the Duchy of Nassau. Three months later, the monastery was expropriated, and the remaining four monks moved into a residential house in Höchst. After various considerations for its use, including as a barracks or archive, a provisional school was established in 1804, before the complex was sold in two parts in 1809.

The former Antonite Monastery is located in the Höchst district of Frankfurt am Main, a metropolis in the federal state of Hesse, Germany.

Two buildings of the former monastery complex have been preserved. The building at Bolongarostraße 137–139, essentially late Gothic from 1441 to 1443 and enhanced with Renaissance oriel windows in 1586, now serves as a residential building and senior citizens' day care center. The second preserved building at Bolongarostraße 143, whose core dates back to 1516, displays a transitional style from late Gothic to Renaissance. It underwent structural changes in the 19th century, with shops created on the ground floor, but was largely restored to its early 16th-century condition in 1994.
