Antoniterkloster Grünberg

The Antonite Monastery in Grünberg was likely founded in 1193. The Antonites, originally a French lay brotherhood dedicated to caring for those afflicted with St. Anthony's Fire, evolved into a canon regular order. The monastery's strategically favorable location facilitated its rapid development into a general preceptory, encompassing numerous daughter and affiliated monasteries across Europe, from Hesse to Norway and Latvia. An early affiliated monastery was established in Tempzin near Wismar in 1222. In 1526, the last preceptor of the monastery died. With the introduction of the Reformation in the Landgraviate of Hesse by Landgrave Philipp in the same year, the monastery was dissolved. Its lands were initially assigned to the University of Marburg and later to the University of Gießen. From 1577, Philipp's son Ludwig IV had the monastic complex converted into a widow's residence for his wife Hedwig of Württemberg and later used it as a hunting lodge.

The former Antonite Monastery is situated in Grünberg, a town in the Gießen district of Hesse, Germany. The complex is located in a historic setting, embedded in the landscape of the Gießen region.

The former monastic precinct is now a trapezoidal area comprising various historic buildings. These include the former church building to the west, the so-called Monks' Building to the north, the University Building to the east, and the edifice referred to as the “Castle” to the south. These structures bear witness to the complex's eventful history, which ranged from a hospital order to a general preceptory, and finally to a landgrave's widow's and hunting lodge. A tombstone of Preceptor Conrad von Angersbach from 1477 can still be found in the castle courtyard today.
