Ancient Sanctuary Didyma

The origins of Didyma date back to the turn of the 1st millennium BCE, when the Ionians took over an existing cult site. Legend has it that Apollo was conceived here by Leto and bestowed the gift of prophecy upon a shepherd named Branchos, leading to the priestly lineage of the Branchidae. As early as the 7th century BCE, the oracle enjoyed supra-regional fame, attested by votive offerings from high-ranking rulers. After its destruction by the Persians in the 5th century BCE, construction ceased for about 150 years. In the late 4th century BCE, Miletus initiated the reconstruction of the Temple of Apollo, which, despite centuries of work, was never fully completed. In Roman times, the sanctuary underwent further expansions and was personally honored by emperors such as Hadrian. In the 4th century CE, the oracle ceased its operations, and Didyma later became a bishopric. Earthquakes in the 7th and 15th centuries led to the decline and abandonment of the settlement, which was only re-inhabited in the late 18th century. Since then, the site has been archaeologically explored.

The ancient sanctuary of Didyma is located in Didim, in the Aydın district, within the Ege (Aegean) region of Turkey. It stands at an elevation of approximately 65 meters above sea level.

The impressive remains of the ancient sanctuary are now accessible to visitors and can be explored. Although the Hellenistic temple was never fully completed, its monumental dimensions and preserved architectural details bear witness to its former splendor.
