Ancient City Thasos (Θάσος)

The settlement of the area that would become the city of Thasos began in pre-colonial times, with archaeological finds dating back to the 8th century BC. From around 680 BC, the island state developed as part of the Greek colonizations. As early as the 6th century BC, the city gained great importance and flourished, a period that, despite interruptions, lasted for centuries. In the 5th century BC, the city of Thasos had approximately 20,000 inhabitants, while the entire island population ranged between 60,000 and 80,000. However, in the 7th century AD, the city was destroyed and fell into ruin.

The ancient city of Thasos is situated on the island of Thasos in the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, in Northern Greece. It lies at an elevation of approximately 7 m above sea level.

Today, the impressive remains of the ancient city of Thasos can be visited. Visitors have the opportunity to walk through the ruins and get an impression of the former splendor of this historical site.
