The Vespasian Gate is a prominent structure within the ancient city of Side, which is partially located beneath the modern town of Selimiye on the Turkish Mediterranean coast. This historic site was once a significant port city in the ancient region of Pamphylia and still bears witness to its rich past.
History+
The settlement of Side began approximately 3500 years ago. The city's founding is dated to the 7th century BCE by settlers from Aeolian Kyme, although the church historian Eusebius suggested an even earlier founding around 1405 BCE. Side experienced its heyday during the Roman era of the 2nd and 3rd centuries. In the 5th or 6th century, Side became an episcopal see, leading to further significant construction projects. The city was presumably abandoned in the 10th century, and an earthquake in the 12th century finally destroyed many of the remaining structures.
