History+

The settlement of Side began approximately 3500 years ago, evolving into a significant trade hub in the Pamphylia region. Historians date its founding to around 1405 BC or the 7th century BC by settlers from Kyme. Side's golden age occurred during the Roman era of the 2nd and 3rd centuries, from which most of the preserved ruins originate. In the 5th or 6th century, Side became an episcopal see, leading to further significant construction projects. The city was likely abandoned in the 10th century and severely damaged by an earthquake in the 12th century.
