History+
Side was first settled 3500 years ago and developed into an important port city in the Pamphylia region. Historians date the city's founding to approximately 1405 BC or the 7th century BC. The most prominent ruins, including the Basilica, mainly date from the Roman era of the 2nd and 3rd centuries. Its importance grew further when Side became an episcopal see in the 5th or 6th century. The city was presumably abandoned in the 10th century, and an earthquake in the 12th century finally destroyed many of the remaining structures.
