The Ancient City of Side Aqueduct is an impressive testament to Roman engineering, once supplying the important port city of Side with fresh water. The remains of this ancient structure are located in Selimiye, a district of Antalya on the Turkish Mediterranean coast.
History+
The ancient city of Side, whose origins date back to the 7th century BC and which flourished in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, relied on a dependable water supply. This was ensured by a complex aqueduct system that channeled drinking water from the Manavgat River, located approximately 30 km away, into the city. Side was presumably abandoned in the 10th century, and an earthquake in the 12th century significantly contributed to the destruction of many remaining structures, including parts of the aqueducts.
