Ancient city Phoinike

The ancient town can be visited

The ancient city of Phoinike, a significant historical site in southern Albania, is perched on a hill near the modern village of Finiq. It was once an important center in the region of Chaonia, part of Epirus, and is renowned for its role in the political and military conflicts of antiquity.

History+

Phoinike emerged as early as the 5th century BC and remained important until late antiquity. An Illyrian attack in 230 BC provoked Roman intervention and contributed to its expansion along the Adriatic coast. During the First Macedonian War (215–205 BC), the Epirote League, to which Phoinike belonged, sought a mediating role. This led to the Peace Conference of Phoinike in 205 BC, where Romans, Macedonians, Epirotes, and Aetolians convened. A bishop from Phoinike participated in the Council of Ephesus in 431 AD. The first archaeological investigations began in the 1920s by Luigi Maria Ugolini; since 2006, the site has been jointly explored by Albanian and Italian archaeologists, with a theater discovered in 2006.

The ruins of Phoinike are situated on a hill approximately 250 meters above sea level near Finiq in the Delvina district, Vlora region, Albania. South of the site, a vast plain extends to the Butrint Lagoon.
