Ancient Town Philippopolis-Roman theatre

The construction of this significant theatre dates back to the late reign of Emperor Trajan, specifically between 116 and 117 AD, as evidenced by an inscription on the architrave of the eastern proscenium. Originally conceived as a central gathering place, the theatre served not only for cultural performances but also as the seat of the Thracian provincial assembly. Evidence of safety measures suggests that gladiatorial contests may also have taken place here. In the late 4th century, a large part of the theatre was destroyed by fire or earthquake, possibly in connection with the Huns' invasions. After centuries of being buried, it was rediscovered between 1968 and 1979 during archaeological excavations and subsequently restored according to the principles of anastylosis.

The ancient Roman Theatre is located in Plovdiv, in the Plovdiv district, in the Plovdiv region, Bulgaria. It is situated at an elevation of approx. 186 m above sea level, nestled between the southwest slope of Dzhamabaz Tepe hill and Taksim Tepe hill in the old town.

The well-preserved remains of the Roman Theatre are now accessible to visitors. It continues to serve as a vibrant cultural venue and is regularly used for theatre and music performances during the summer months, including the annual International Folklore Festival Plovdiv.
